Past continuous

​​​​​​​Was he playing soccer when his mom arrived? 
They were watching a movie while their parents were preparing dinner. 

The past continuous is used to describe two types of actions happening in the past.​

One action that was happening in the past and was interrupted by another action in the past.

Use when

The second verb is in the simple past.
​Two actions that were happening at the same time in the past.

Use while

Both verbs are in the past continuous.
​I was studying when you called me. 

We were having dinner when Joanna fell off her chair. 

Vincent was working in the basement when Lise came over.
​I was studying while you were sleeping

We were having dinner while the neighbours were playing in their pool. 

Vincent was working in the basement while Lise was reading.​
