Good evening!
The test oath consisted of several things like: -
Swearing loyalty to the King of Great Britain;
-Rejection of the authority of the Pope;
-Rejection of the Catholic religion.
For a while, it was obligatory to do so in order to access a job in public service in the Province of Quebec. The purpose of this was to exclude French Catholics from all administrative positions during the royal proclamation of 1763.
In 1774, Governor Guy Carleton convinced King George III to adopt a new constitution: the Quebec Act. The purpose of this constitution was to be more conciliatory towards francophones in order to preserve the peace. They then changed the oath for the test for an oath of allegiance, thus allowing some Francophones / Catholics to access some administrative positions. The oath of allegiance is simply an oath of loyalty and obedience to the king.
