Hello, I would like to know why didn't Hitler take Leningrad in 1941?

Bombing on 8 September caused 178 fires. On 21 September, German High Command considered how to destroy Leningrad. Occupying the city was ruled out "because it would make us responsible for food supply".

This is a very good question!
Here is why:
1.The poor planning of Operation Barbarossa
2. The Army Group North lacked resources (especially ammunition)
3. Several geographical obstacles would have been encountered (forests, swamps and rivers)
Also, since this is an urban fight (the precedent is Warsaw), its relevance is questionned by the authorities. The Finnish military leader (Marshal Mannerheim) had also repeated that he did not want to engage in the operation.
