Poster: Number Sets

Article

This poster serves as a visual reference for number sets. The diagram and table (including examples) make it easier to understand and consolidate these fundamental mathematical concepts.

Four Activities for Reviewing Number Sets with Your Students

Understanding the different number sets and how they relate to each other is crucial to developing structured, logical mathematical thinking. For a dynamic approach to these concepts in the classroom, try these ideas:

  • Have your students watch the Alloprof video on number sets (French only) in class or as part of a flipped classroom approach.
  • Have your students take a quiz where they have to match number sets to their different properties.
  • Put together a “true or false” quiz with examples of numbers belonging to different number sets. For example, “3/4 is a natural number. True or false?”
  • Draw a table with the columns ℕ, ℤ, ℚ, ℚ' (or ℝ\ ℚ) and ℝ and pass out sticky notes with different numbers to your students. Then, divide the class into teams and organize a relay race with the goal of putting the numbers in the right columns as quickly as possible.
