Hi, with this question how do we know which lens we are supposed to choose to build macro lens? Thank you

Hi GalaxieFiable2952! A macro lens is used to increase the focus of a camera. Considering this, does the focal length of the lenses have to be positive or negative for the camera's focus to be maximum? As a reminder, a diverging lens has a negative focal length.
