Although these two people sat on the Sovereign Council of New France (with the bishop and advisers), they performed different tasks:
The governor represented the king in New France, was responsible for relations with the Indigenous and the English colonies and played the role of military leader of the colony.
The steward, meanwhile, was responsible for finance, commerce, settlement and justice. Jean Talon is surely the steward whom history remembers the most, having among other things been the first steward to go to New France.
