    Good evening!

In 1627, the King of France gave the monopoly of the fur trade to the Company of the Hundred Associates, on condition that it populated the colony. 50 years later, the company has not fulfilled its mandate and New France is still sparsely populated.

In 1663, Louis XIV sets up a royal government in the colony which had to manage its future. This government aims to diversify the economy and populate the colony.

As the King of France holds all the powers over his country and its colonies, he is the head of the royal government. He appoints himself who occupies certain functions in the government such as the Secretary of State for the Navy or the Bishop.

The Secretary of State for the Navy then appoints a steward and a governor general.

Have you perhaps heard of Jean Talon? He was the first intendant of New France. This man did what is called the settlement policy. It is due to this policy that many orphan women called the King’s daughters came to New France in order to get married and increase the number of births in the colony.

In addition, the royal government ensures a military presence in the colony in order to defend it against the many Iroquois attacks.

    Hope this answers your questions!
