The seigneurial regime was applied in New France by the Company of the One Hundred Associates around the year 1627. It is a system of organization of the territory (division of land into a rectangle called seigneury) and organization of the company that comes from France. The lands are distributed to lords who divide them into censives, smaller plots of land. These censives were then distributed to the censitaires. The seigneurial regime does not only divide the territory of New France, it also comes with rights and duties between the king and the lords, but also between the lords and their censitaires.
