In fact, 5 = 1 + 4 is true, because you have to do the mathematical operation to see the equality. As 1 + 4 = 5, we can therefore say that 5 = 1 + 4, because this amounts to saying that 5 = 5.
The equal sign simply means that the number which is found to the left of the equal sign and the one on the right are equal.
