    First of all, an authoritarian regime is the opposite of a democratic regime.

    Second, a totalitarian regime is a form of authoritarian regime. Thus, totalitarian regimes are authoritarian, but not all authoritarian regimes are totalitarian.

    Here are some characteristics that are specific to totalitarian regimes:

    • The use of propaganda to disseminate ideologies;
    • The desire to dominate all aspects of people's lives, including their privacy, therefore having repercussions on family, hobbies, etc.
    • The abolition of any notion of private life;
    • The claim of wanting to start over and build a new society that is completely different from the past.

    For example, Hitler's fascist regime was a totalitarian regime.
