      Can is used to express present abilities and skills. The key word is present. It is the equivalent in french of "je peux".

      Could is used to express past or conditionnal abilities and skills. It is the equivalent in french of "je pouvais" if you use it to talk about the past and "je pourrais" if you use it to talk about a conditionnal ability or skill.
