Fun ways to liven up elementary school English homework and lessons

Article

Finding new ways to liven up English homework and lessons takes time, energy, and a heaping helping of inspiration. To give you a little help, Alloprof has a few suggestions that will make schoolwork feel a little more like play.

Write and decorate a postcard

Postcards are a great way to practise writing skills. Plus, handwriting personal messages can help students develop their emotional skills. For this activity, have students write and decorate a postcard inspired by a theme of your choice for someone they know or a fictional character. For example, students could write a postcard from one character, plant, or animal to another.

Play Potager en péril

Alloprof’s games are a great way to make homework fun. For example, you could ask students to play Potager en péril to review French parts of speech. Students play the role of a valiant carrot on a quest to save its vegetable garden from pests by correctly identifying nouns, determiners, verbs, etc. The more successful players are, the more fun accessories they earn and the more monsters they can fight. If they create an Alloprof account, students can also save their progress in the game and contact us in the Help Zone with any questions!

Explore new expressions and proverbs

We often use figurative language and proverbs to express ourselves in everyday conversation. This activity aims to introduce students to English proverbs and expressions related to nature, such as “to be under the weather” or “to be down to earth.” Ask your class to look up proverbs and expressions and explain what they mean in everyday life. For example, you could provide a list of phrases for them to look up or ask your students to each make a list of their five favourite phrases. Back in class, you can do activities that build on what they’ve learned, such as having students act out or draw their expressions. This activity also promotes lexical awareness, which in turn can help students develop a love of reading.

Form writing circles

Give your students a writing assignment for homework. You can choose whether or not to specify a theme or genre. In class, have them form small groups (three to five students) to share, comment on, and revise their work. Students can learn from each other and pool their strengths and skills. In addition, this approach allows students to practice all three language skills: speaking, writing, and reading.

Play Magimot

There’s no better way to learn new French vocabulary words than by playing Magimot! It’s a spellbinding educational video game that lets students have fun while learning how to spell words. You can even add your own list of spelling words to the game and generate an access code for your students. Students can also add their own spelling lists.
