Holiday Banners to Decorate Your Classroom

Article

Print out these festive banners and ask your students to colour them in, then hang them up to decorate your classroom. It’s a simple way to share warm holiday wishes with each other.

Activity Details

Materials

  • Printed banners (at least one per student)
  • Coloured pencils, crayons, or markers
  • Scissors

Optional Materials

  • A hole punch (if you want to thread them on a string) or a stapler or tape (if you want to fold down the edge to thread a string through)
  • String or twine
  • Tacks (if you want to display them on a cork bulletin board)

Steps

  1. Preparation: Print the banner templates (one side only). Cut out a few ahead of time if you want to show students a completed version.
  2. Explanation: Ask students to think of a hope, wish, or inspirational message they’d like to share this holiday season (for the class, their family, the world, etc.).
Examples: I hope that everyone feels joy this Christmas. – I wish for lots of snow to play in. – May your holidays be filled with laughter! – May every child get an awesome toy!
  3. Colouring and decoration: Students colour in and decorate their banner to make it festive and unique.
  4. Assembly: Once the banners have been decorated, students cut out their banner along the outline. Make two holes at the base of each triangle.
  5. Hanging: Thread the banners onto a long piece of string or cord. Hang the assembled banner in the classroom where everyone can see it (above the blackboard, in the hall, or above the door).
