How to Use Pronoms in class, the interactive exercise on pronouns!

Article

We created this interactive pronominalization exercise to give students a fun and simple way to practise pronominalization, an essential syntactic manipulation in French!

What is the Pronoms Interactive Exercise?

This interactive exercise allows students to practise a key syntactic manipulation in French: replacing a word or group of words with a pronoun.

With regular practice, students develop their skills and, step by step, become pronoun pros.

This exercise aims to help students:

  • properly construct sentences
  • better organize their ideas
  • ensure that information is replaced with a proper alternative
  • ensure coherence within a text
A sneak peak at the exercice.

How Does the Exercise Work?

  • This exercise has multiple levels of difficulty, so students can play according to their grade level and skills. It’s aimed primarily at students in grades 3 to 6, but could also be useful for older and younger students.
  • The exercise allows students to correct their mistakes. They receive targeted feedback and can retry missed questions until they get the right answers.
  • Pronominalisation can be played on a tablet or computer.

How to Use the Exercise in Class

There are many ways to use Pronominalisation in your classroom. Students can play individually, in teams, or even together with the whole class. Here are some ideas to try:

  • Students can play at home once you have explained the related concepts in class: pronouns, subject, direct complement, repetition of information, etc.
  • Check students’ understanding by practising as a class.
  • Boost student motivation by having mini-competitions between teams.
  • Use the exercise as a jumping off point for additional syntactic analysis. For example, after choosing the right replacement pronoun with your students, continue analyzing the sentence by identifying the subject, direct complement, etc. Pronominalisation has a large sentence bank, so you’ll never run out of examples!
