How do I use the interactive decimal exercise with my students?

Article

It can be tricky for teachers to come up with interesting new ways to teach decimal addition and subtraction. Aside from the fact that some students have a lot of trouble with these operations, every student learns at a different speed. To help you out, Alloprof has developed an interactive decimal exercise that works as an innovative classroom tool.

Key features

Our interactive decimal operations exercise can be accessed via cellphone, tablet, or PC. It is designed to help with practising decimal addition and subtraction. Here are a few reasons why it makes for a practical and appealing tool for your students:

  • The operations are adapted to students’ grade level.
  • Students can choose the number of operations they want to do.
  • The exercise allows for operations that require regrouping.
  • The difficulty level changes if a student is struggling so that they can progress at their own pace.
  • Students can track their progress thanks to the statistics feature when they log in to their Alloprof account.
  • Students who are logged in will automatically restart the exercise at the level where they finished their last session.
  • Students can customize the exercise background for a personalized experience.

Ideas to liven up your lessons

The interactive decimal operations exercise allows you to vary your teaching methods in many ways. Here are a few examples:

  • If you have one, try projecting the exercise on an interactive whiteboard. Students can then share their answers by raising their hands.
  • If your students have access to computers or tablets, have them practise solving operations individually or in small groups (i.e., independent or cooperative learning).
  • Set up learning stations, one of which lets students experiment with the interactive exercise. A separate station might focus on reviewing decimals using our concept sheets or videos.

Homework and lesson review

Students with an Alloprof account can save their progress in the exercise, meaning they can continue where they left off during their last session. This feature is useful for homework and lesson review because it allows students to practise regularly, as many times as they want, and check their answers right away. If a student is not logged in to their account, they have to start over at the initial difficulty level each time they go back to the exercise.

Differentiated instruction

The interactive decimal operations exercise is a valuable tool for differentiated instruction because it adapts to every student’s needs. It gauges students’ performance and adjusts the difficulty level to suit their learning pace. Here is how this setting works:

  • Following a correct answer, the difficulty level increases slightly.
  • Following an incorrect answer, the difficulty level decreases to allow the student to consolidate their learning and ensure they stay motivated.
  • In the event of two or more correct or incorrect answers in a row, the level increases or decreases accordingly.
  • When the maximum difficulty is reached, the student receives only questions of that level (until they make a mistake).
  • The difficulty level never increases beyond the student’s grade level so that they do not get operations they may not yet know how to solve.
  • In order to avoid discouraging them, students are not notified when the difficulty level decreases after a series of wrong answers. The exercise aims to be just challenging enough so that students can succeed and improve.
