Eco-friendly Diet: A Few Learning Activity Ideas

Article
Update : April 10, 2024

The food industry produces more than just the food we eat. It is also a major source of greenhouse gases, accounting for over one-third of total emissions. From our food choices to our eating habits, every bite we consume has a colossal impact on the carbon footprint of our diets. The classroom is a great place to dig into the environmental impact of what we eat.

Here are some tips on teaching your students about this important issue. Please note that all links and resources are in French only.

Use Educational Resources

  1. Climato_

Aimed at youth aged 12 to 17, Climato_ is a collection of educational tools developed by Lab22 and Carburant Humain to raise awareness and promote engagement regarding climate change and the ecological transition. It includes a video and educational worksheet that deal specifically with food and the environment, as well as Climatomenu, a game designed to raise public awareness of the environmental impact of food waste.

  2. Education kit: À la soupe!
Cycles 1 and 2, Social Sciences, Science and Technology, French, Mathematics (Équiterre, 2022)

This set of educational activities focuses on sustainable eating. The kit invites students to explore the other side of today’s agri-food system and to reflect on the impact of their food choices on their health, their environment, and the world around them. All proposed activities comply with Quebec’s education program.

  3. Activity: Nos choix alimentaires et l’environnement au Québec aujourd’hui
    Cycle 1, Geography (Bader, B., Teixeira, M., and I. Arseneau, 2018)

This activity gets students to examine what they eat and consider what measures could guarantee their health, the health of the entire province, and the protection of the environment, both in and outside Quebec.

Zero-Waste, Vegetarian Class Lunches

The next time you organize a special class lunch, why not make it an eco-friendly affair? Encourage students to bring their own set of reusable cutlery to minimize waste, and plan a plant-based menu that ideally showcases local, seasonal produce.

As in so many other areas, adopting eco-friendly habits when it comes to food has a positive effect on people’s health. The importance of making sustainable food choices thus goes well beyond the fact of reducing our environmental impact. It is also a powerful way to directly influence our individual and collective well-being.
