Speedy Rabbit : Turning Mental Math into a Game

Article

Many students find mental arithmetic difficult to master, whether they are working on multiplication, division, subtraction, or addition. The notion of a missing term can present an additional obstacle. As a teacher, you understand that adding fun activities to your lessons can make learning more stimulating and enjoyable. Speedy Rabbit is a fun, interactive game that helps students improve their mental math and arithmetic skills. Read on to find out how this Alloprof game can transform your teaching!

Overview

Are you looking for a tool that will help your students practise their multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction tables, and review operations with missing terms? Speedy Rabbit is the perfect solution!

Speedy Rabbit is one of Alloprof’s most popular games, and it is periodically improved in response to feedback from students, parents, and teachers.

Its fourth iteration offers the following features, among others:

  • Optimized cross-platform capability (Web, iOS and Android)
  • Available in French and English
  • Lets players choose between operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), and math tables (1 to 12)
  • Presents operations in different ways to practise the notion of missing terms
  • Adapts to each student’s level in Adventure mode, taking into account their correct and incorrect answers. In this sense, Speedy Rabbit minimizes comparison between students: with the same game interface, those who do better will be encouraged to take on more advanced challenges, while beginners will start with simpler operations.

Features and Gameplay

Speedy Rabbit comes in two complementary modes: Adventure mode and Quick Play mode. Both offer learning advantages.

Adventure mode offers a progression adapted to the student’s answers, and has three different courses where players can choose the types of operations they want to work on (they can choose just one, or select a combination of operations)

Players progress through five worlds, including the Forest of Pi and Unknown Ice Floe. Each world has a champion who guides the players as they advance in the game. Students will meet Daphne Decimal, Calvin Calculus, Albert Algebra, and more! To move on to the next world, they must successfully defeat the level’s champion.

Each world offers a variety of game types:

  • Competition, where several rabbits are on the starting line and the player has to beat their competitors and reach the finish line as quickly as possible.
  • Marathon, where the game continues until the player makes too many mistakes.
  • Sprint, where the player has to reach the finish line within a set time.
  • Duel, where the player faces off against an adversary in a tug-of-war and pulls the rope a little closer to their side with each correct answer.
  • Champion challenge, which is the final stage in each world. In this challenge, students have to beat the champion to be victorious. Champions are faster than the other opponents the student has encountered in a given world, and the difficulty level is slightly higher than in previous games.

Results and progress are recorded in the student’s player account, which provides an effective way to monitoring student performance. As a bonus, students collect tokens with each of their victories, which they can use to buy accessories for their rabbit. A few different facial features are available for free, so that the students can customize their characters a bit right from the start.

The Quick Play mode does not adapt to the player’s results, but it does enable them to practise specific operations and tables. For example, a student who struggles with the 7’s table in multiplication could practise these operations exclusively. Students can also choose their preferred play mode (competition, marathon, sprint, duel, champion challenge, or training).

The training option is specific to Quick Play mode. This challenge removes the pressure by offering a practice game without time limits or performance requirements. It is a great option for students who still need to familiarize themselves with the tables to play and learn at their own pace.

Speedy Rabbit’s multiplayer mode allows up to four students to play simultaneously. One student acts as the host and generates a simple code which they share with the other players, who can join the game from their own device. This mode makes gaming sessions fast paced and motivating. Players do not need to sign in to an Alloprof account to play in multiplayer mode.

Using the Game in the Classroom

Whether in the classroom or at home, there are a ton of ways to use Speedy Rabbit as a learning tool! Here are a few ideas:

  • You can project the game on the screen as a morning brain warm-up session, to fill the last few minutes before the lunch break or recess, or as an activity to suggest to a substitute teacher. Have the class give the answers, with either you or a student controlling the keyboard. Make a note of the operations that were more challenging for the class so that you can come back to them later.
  • In need of ideas for learning stations? Create a game corner with a tablet or computer and let students play Speedy Rabbit as a fun way to practise math operations.
  • Observe how students who have more difficulty in math use the game to get a better idea of their reasoning and gaps. The training option in Quick Play mode is another great way for students to practise a wide variety of operations without time or performance-related pressure.
  • Speedy Rabbit is a fun option to suggest to students who finish their work quickly or who need enrichment activities. Because the game adapts to their progress, it keeps them challenged and motivated.
  • It is common for parents to feel overwhelmed when trying to help their children memorize math tables. Speedy Rabbit can be integrated into a range of memorization strategies. For example, you could incorporate a goal into their weekly homework plan where students have to beat a champion and conquer a game world!
