5 ways to use Alloprof games in the classroom

Article

Learning isn’t always child’s play. Fortunately, there are a wide range of teaching strategies that can help make memorizing and understanding certain concepts easier. In fact, gamification is becoming more and more common in the classroom, and thanks to our many online games, Alloprof is a veritable gold mine for teachers! Here are five learning strategies featuring Alloprof games along with ideas on how to use them in class.

Reading strategies

Book of Spells is a fantastic interactive tool that presents students with a collection of texts by Quebec children’s authors. It’s filled with reading strategies and is a great way to practise reading comprehension in large groups. For example, you can choose a text that students will read individually and then discuss it together in class.

Vocabulary review

Magimot is fun game students can play to review and improve their French vocabulary. So how does it work? Here are a few ideas you can try:

  • Create teams made up of two or three students.
  • Read the questions together as a class.
  • Give each team 15 seconds (or more) to come up with an answer.
  • Ask each team to take turns sharing their answers.

French parts of speech

Knowing the difference between nouns, determiners, pronouns, verbs, and adjectives isn’t always easy! That’s why we created Potager en péril, an enticing game that helps children learn French parts of speech. It’s a great way to help your students review these terms and practise recognizing them. Here’s how to play:

  • Create teams of two or three students.
  • Choose a part of speech and ask your students to pick them out of a given text.
  • Give them two minutes (or more) to identify as many words belonging to that particular part of speech as they can.

Math tables

Looking to vary your teaching routine? What could be more fun than turning into a rabbit in order to brush up on your addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication skills! Speedy Rabbit lets you do just that. Here’s an idea for how you can play in the classroom, if you have access to several computers.

  • Divide the class into teams depending on how many computers you have access to.
  • Ask your students to stand in line behind the computer their team has been assigned.
  • Make sure all computers are set up the same.
  • Start the game at the same time.

The student at the head of the line answers the first question. Once their answer has been entered, they go to the back of the line, and the next player takes their turn. Once the round is over, you can compare each team’s results.

Team spirit

Whether you’re playing Magimot or Potager en péril, you can use Alloprof games to build team spirit (and review concepts at the same time!) by encouraging your students to play as a team. Here’s how:

  • Select a game and project it onto your interactive whiteboard.
  • Read the questions out loud, one at a time.
  • Write the students’ answers on the board.
  • Ask them to vote on which answer they think is best.
  • Check and see if it’s right.
  • Proceed to the next question, and so on.

Using the game summary

At the end of each game, you’ll be shown a summary that will give you an overview of your students’ performance and understanding of the task at hand. The summary makes it easy to identify your students’ weaknesses so that you can figure out what they need to work on. This small feature that can be a big help!
