Good morning mangousteagile51!
The working class was predominantly made up of French-speaking men, women and children. The factories were mainly run by Anglophone bourgeois.
The working conditions were difficult. A week of work consisted of six days of 10 hours each, sometimes with overtime. At the time, a woman normally made half of a man's salary. As wages were generally very low, all family members had to work in order to pay for family expenses.
The factories were messy, dimly lit and often poorly heated. Several workers were injured because the machines with which they were working were not safe. If an employee was ill or injured and couldn’t work, he would not receive any pay or compensation.
