Hello! I'm not sure if the Q in Q = m * c * ∆T means the heat or thermal energy?
Also, when is the Q positive and negative?
Thanks in advance :)

Hello!
The variable Q in the formula Q = m * c * ∆T represents the amount of thermal energy stored in a substance.
A positive Q value means that the substance has absorbed energy, while a negative value indicates that the substance has lost energy.
The variable Q derives its sign from the temperature variation. If the variation is positive, the substance is absorbing heat. On the other hand, if the variation is negative, then the substance gives off heat.
