In 1989, Tian'anmen Square was the place of demonstration which ended in a wave of repression. This political event in China denounces corruption and calls for political and democratic reforms. The government instituted martial law and brought in the military. There were several victims and several arrests.

Sur la place Tiananmen, l'armée a réprimé une manifestation pour la démocratie, tuant plusieurs centaines de personnes.
«Dans la nuit du 3 au 4 juin 1989, les chars de l'armée chinoise sont entrés dans Pékin et ont tué des centaines de manifestants réunis sur la place Tiananmen. Dans le sang, ils ont éteint un mouvement réclamant une Chine plus démocratique. L'événement marque un point de rupture dans la conception que l'Occident a de la Chine, explique l'historienne Olga Alexeeva.»
