The National Cancer Institute explains quite simply what a cancer is:
"Cancer is a disease in which some of the body’s cells grow uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body."
Normally, human cells multiply through cell division as the body needs them. After a while, cells die; their place is taken by new cells.
A cancer forms when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably and do not die. These cells then form tumors, which, in some cases, become a cancer.
