Hi,

Why does “warmer” have 1 m if the word “warm” ends with a consonant? Cause when there is a consonant at the end, we must double it and add -er

    Hi, PerroquetAdmirable5918! :)

    Thank you for reaching out.

    We double the last consonant before adding -er only when the word follows this pattern:

    consonant + vowel + consonant (CVC) and the vowel is short.

    Examples:

    • big --> bigger
    • hot --> hotter
    • sad --> sadder

    In these words, the last consonant is doubled.

    However, warm is not a short single vowel in a CVC pattern.

    So we do not double the m, we simply add -er!

    I hope this helped. Here is our concept sheet on the subject:

    Feel free to reach out again! :)
