I have an exam on Monday, and I really don't understand this question, so I am worried.
The Heimlich maneuver, used to expel blockages in the airways, requires the application of repeated pressure on the bottom of the diaphragm. Using your knowledge of the mechanics of ventilation and changes in pressure, explain why this maneuver works.

Hi CalmSwan,
Thanks for your question!
The Heimlich maneuver, by compressing the bottom of the diaphragm, leads to compression of the lungs. The pression in the lungs will thus lead the air in the lungs to exit via the trachea. This air will then exerts pressure on any object lodged in the trachea, hopefully expelling it.
Don't hesitate to reach out again if needed:)
