Article

Change can be stressful. However, if you look hard enough, you can almost always find a silver lining. Here are five ways you can help your teen see the positive side of remote learning.

They can learn at their own pace

Remote learning offers a lot of flexibility. Teens can therefore adjust their study habits according to their attention span and go at their own pace. For instance, your teen could do the following:

  • Create an environment that helps them stay focused
  • Divide their work into smaller tasks
  • Switch between subjects
  • Make a schedule that works for them
  • Take lots of short breaks
  • Talk out loud to stay focused
  • Sleep in a little longer
  • Etc.

They have more chances to get up and move around

Remote learning affords more space to move around and expend pent-up energythan a traditional classroom. Each time your teen finishes an assignment, you could suggest that they do the following:

  • Dance around
  • Go outside for a quick 10 minute jog
  • Shoot some hoops
  • Do a mini yoga session
  • Stretch
  • Etc.

They don’t have to ask questions in front of the entire class

Highly motivated students ask questions and don’t let their uncertainties hinder their progress. However, some shy students find it hard to even raise their hand in class. If your teen is more introverted, remote learning has a clear advantage because it makes it easy for them to do the following:

  • Think about how to word their question
  • Send a private message
  • Send a diagram or drawing
  • Etc.

They have more time for other activities

Not having to travel to and from school saves your teen precious time. As soon as they finish their morning routine, they can start working. Here are a few things they can do in their free time:

  • Draw
  • Read
  • Play an instrument
  • Do sports
  • Help prepare meals
  • Etc.

They learn to be more autonomous

Remote learning forces teens to be more autonomous. They have to learn to do the following on their own:

This new-found autonomy will help them develop the following:

  • Better planning skills
  • Greater self-esteem
  • A sense of independence
  • Etc.
