Template for a Letter to Santa Claus

Article

Every year, Canada Post invites children across the country, whether naughty or nice, to send a letter to Santa for free (no stamps required!). Not only is writing a letter Santa an opportunity for your child to share their Christmas wishes, but it also helps encourage them to practise their writing skills.

Why Write a Letter to Santa?

This wholesome holiday tradition gives kids the opportunity to express their Christmas wishes in their own words. In their letter, they can also recount a favourite memory, tell Santa about a good deed they did this year, or share a drawing of their Christmas wish. By reflecting on the year’s memorable moments, they learn to practise gratitude.

Plus, this activity allows them to practise their writing skills and exercise their creativity.

Your child can write their letter all on their own or, if they need a little help, simply fill in the blanks in the template provided.

The tradition of postal services answering letters to Santa dates back to the 1960s, when a French postal worker inspired the creation of the very first Santa secretariat. She was frustrated to see children’s letters to Santa going unanswered and wanted to do something about it. Risking her job and even a prison sentence, as it’s illegal to open other people’s mail, she started answering children’s letters on behalf of Santa Claus. Later, she received official authorization to reply to these letters. In 1962, a minister took an interest in her work and officially founded the Santa secretariat, which is under the direction of the French postal service.
