A Holiday Postcard | Learning activity

Article

The holiday season is the perfect time to remind loved ones of how important they are to us, no matter how far away they may be. Sending postcards with best wishes to family or as a thank you to someone who helped you out is also an excellent way to pass on the spirit of sharing and community to your little ones.

Simply cut out the postcard, have your child write a message to someone special on it, add a stamp, then put it in the mail!

Encourage your child to add their own personality to the drawing by colouring it in or embellishing it with their own decorations.

A Handy Guide to Writing a Postcard

Here are a few tips for explaining the process to your child:

  • Prepare the text: Have them start with a rough draft or outline of their postcard text. This will help them organize their message in a way that will fit the limited space available.
  • Reinforce their writing skills: Writing a friendly message will help your child practise certain skills, including their penmanship.
  • Spark their creativity: Encourage your child to use various art techniques and materials (crayons, markers, glitter, or even collage) to make their postcard one-of-a-kind. If your child is a keen artist, why not print out several cards for them to decorate and hang up as holiday decorations?
  • Discover the world of stamps: Let your child choose their favourite stamp design at the post office to add a final, personal touch to their postcard.
