In Secondary II, students are required to take the compulsory French examination administered by the Ministère de l’Éducation du Québec. Here’s how you can help your child prepare.

The exam

The compulsory French exam is used to assess the disciplinary competency Writes various types of texts. During the 3-hour exam, your child will be asked to write a 300-word descriptive/persuasive text. Based on a given scenario, they’ll need to describe a subject and present and defend their point of view. This will involve several steps:

  • Determining their position and goals
  • Identifying their audience
  • Choosing primary and secondary ideas to focus on
  • Finding examples to support their ideas
  • Etc.

Evaluation criteria

The compulsory French exam is evaluated on five criteria:

  • Adaptation to the communication situation
  • Coherence of the text
  • Use of appropriate vocabulary
  • Proper sentence structure and punctuation
  • Proper spelling and grammar
Did you know?

This year, the ministry exam is worth 20% of the evaluated competency.

Preparation

During the compulsory French examination, your child will be allowed to use the following materials:

  • Exam notes booklet
  • Any standard or specialized unilingual French dictionary
  • Grammar rule books
  • Grammar textbooks
  • Conjugation books

Your child will NOT be allowed to use the following materials:

  • Electronic devices
  • Exam preparatory documents
  • Technological tools
  • Notes prepared at home
  • Any material containing writing tips
  • Any material containing revision tips

All students are given 3 hours and 20 minutes to prepare in class. Your child should use this time to do research and organize their notes booklet.

The notes booklet is an essential tool that your child should use wisely. A well-prepared booklet should contain a variety of information:

  • Ideas
  • Grammar concepts
  • A text outline
  • Proverbs
  • Statistics
  • Etc.
Be careful!

Students are strictly forbidden from including any pre-written text in their notes booklet.

Things to keep in mind during the exam

The compulsory French examination tests students on what they’ve learned in class and has them complete a variety of tasks. To help ensure your child doesn’t forget any essential elements, remind them to do the following:

  • Read over their work
  • Check that their writing is coherent and well structured
  • Include only relevant information
  • Avoid making contradictory statements
  • Use a varied vocabulary
  • Use appropriate syntax
  • Incorporate cultural references
  • Vary sentence style and type
  • Etc.
