Heptagons, trapezoids, rhombuses, oh my! It can be hard to keep track of all the different geometric shapes. Since experience and research suggest that there are many benefits to learning through play, why not help your child learn about polygons using a game? In this fun activity, your little one will learn to recognize and identify polygons.

Diversified Learning

Originally intended as a memory game, this versatile tool can be adapted to your child’s age and knowledge level. In addition to the instructions included with the tool, you can try the variations below:

  • Make the memory game easier by printing the shapes or names twice. Your child’s goal will be to match the identical pairs.
  • Ask riddles in the style of “Who am I?” For example, lay out all the cards with shapes in front of your child, then say “I’m a five-sided polygon” as a riddle for the pentagon. Your child can point to each shape you describe.
  • Conversely, show your child a shape and have them say the name of the polygon. You can set a time limit for an added challenge.
  • Have your child put all the cards in front of them face up and then correctly pair the shapes with their names.
  • Ask your child to sort the polygons into different categories, such as those with four sides or those whose sides are all the same length.
