How to choose and pack your child’s backpack

Article

It’s extremely important to choose the right backpack (or school bag) for your child to minimize discomfort and promote good posture. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when you’re ready to make your next purchase.

Find a backpack that’s the right size

Some students’ backpacks are so big that the kids look like little turtles. For your child’s health and comfort, choose a size suited to their height. Here’s how to know if your child’s pack is the right size:

  • The backpack should be narrower than their rib cage
  • It should sit 2 to 5 cm below the tops of their shoulders
  • The bottom should be in line with their hips, not their bum
  • Etc.
Be careful!

We recommend asking your child’s school for recommendations before buying a bag, as some schools offer guidelines on choosing the right one.

Check the width of the shoulder straps

If you’re tempted to buy a messenger bag, keep in mind that a backpack is the better option because it will distribute weight evenly over both of your child’s shoulders. If you do get a backpack, make sure the straps meet the following criteria:

  • Padded
  • At least 5 cm wide
  • Adjustable
  • Etc.

Choose a backpack that’s comfortable

Even if your child is only interested in colourful backpacks with pretty designs, you should make sure they get one that’s the right size, made with good straps, and comfortable. Ask yourself the following questions before making your purchase:

  • Do the shoulder straps allow for good blood circulation?
  • Does the pack have a chest strap?
  • Does the hip belt fit properly?
  • Is the pack made from lightweight, washable fabric?
  • Does it have padded back panels?
  • Does the space between the pack and your child’s back allow for good ventilation?
  • Etc.

Pack it right

Your child will be lugging around notebooks, school supplies, and personal belongings every day. How items are stowed in their pack will have a major impact on your child’s comfort, posture, and back health. Here are examples of tips you can share with them:

  • Place heavy objects close to your back
  • Place lighter items on the sides or in the front of the bag
  • Place your water bottle in the centre of the bag
  • Etc.
Did you know

A full backpack should weigh no more than 10 percent of your child’s body weight in primary school and no more than 15 percent in secondary school.

Check your child’s posture

Before your child leaves for school, make sure their backpack is positioned properly. Here’s what to check for:

  • The straps and belts are properly adjusted
  • Your child has good posture (they’re not leaning forward or backward)
  • The backpack doesn’t bounce against your child’s bum when they walk
  • The straps don’t leave marks on your child’s shoulders
  • The straps don’t slip off their shoulders
  • Etc.
