Given the fundamental role of the four basic math operations, it’s best for your child to memorize them as early as possible. Here are a few tips to help them succeed.
1. Understand the concept
Studies have shown that kids who understand math operations have an easier time remembering math tables. For example, it’s important that they grasp the following:
- Addition is the process of adding one number to another
- Subtraction is the process of removing one number from another
- Multiplication is a repeated addition
- Division is the process of calculating the number of times one number is contained within another
Some operations also have special properties. Here are a few examples in multiplication:
- When multiplying by 1, the product is always the same as the number multiplied by 1
- When multiplying by 2, the product is always an even number
- When multiplying by 4, the product is always an even number
- When multiplying by 5, the product always ends in a 5 or 0
- Etc.
2. Write to remember
Some kids have an easier time retaining information when they’re using all their senses. Writing down math tables (e.g., on a sheet of paper, whiteboard, or window) several times and reading them aloud can be an effective study technique.
3. Find ways to have fun
Whatever the subject, it’s always easier to study when you’re having fun. To make learning math operations more enjoyable, try these activities with your child:
4. Practice makes perfect
Doing math isn’t like riding a bike. All those tables are easy to forget! That’s why it’s important to review them regularly, both during and after school.
