Understanding the code of conduct at your child’s school

Article

Every school in Quebec has its own code of conduct. Its purpose is to ensure a safe and healthy environment for everyone. But who decides what rules to include? How should you interpret them? We answer these questions and more in the following article.

The code of conduct at your child’s school can usually be found on the first pages of their agenda. It contains the rules of conduct that everyone is expected to follow,  determined by the school administration and approved by the governing board.

They apply to all individuals involved with the school (students, teachers, support staff, administrative personnel, and parents). A school’s code of conduct is intended to promote the following:

  • Self-respect
  • Respect for others
  • Respect for the environment

Self-respect

Respect for others can only be achieved through self-respect. A self-respecting student will respect their classmates and the people around them. To encourage self-respect, codes of conduct aim to help students act responsibly and consider their own well-being. For example, students are generally expected to do the following:

  • Arrive to class on time
  • Hand in their work on time
  • Put their cellphone away during class
  • Follow the school dress code
  • Etc.
Be careful!

Take note! These rules may vary according to the values and educational program of each institution.

Respect for others

Living in a community requires certain skills. Whether your child is in the classroom, on the bus, at daycare, having lunch, or at recess, they need to learn to respect the differences and needs of others. Plus, a respectful attitude in the classroom promotes social harmony and learning. To ensure that everyone feels safe and valued, certain rules must be put in place:

  • Use appropriate language
  • Talk to resolve conflicts
  • Don’t intimidate others
  • Don’t steal
  • Don’t behave violently
  • Etc.

Respect for the environment

Respecting the school environment means helping to keep it clean and safe for everyone. Below are some of the rules that make this possible:

  • Properly dispose of waste (garbage, compost, recycling, etc.)
  • Take care of school equipment
  • Don’t damage desks, chairs, lockers, or school premises
  • Etc.

Failing to comply with the code of conduct

Failure to comply with the code can have consequences. The following are the most common disciplinary actions, which may vary depending on the school and the seriousness of the violation:

  • Gesture of reparation
  • Expulsion from class
  • Phone call with the parents
  • Meeting with the parents
  • Suspension
Did you know

At school and in society, we have rights and obligations that everyone must respect. A school’s code of conduct is meant to familiarize students with this concept. Learning the rules is a fundamental part of their education.
