5 ways to encourage students to do math at home in elementary school

Article

Finding new ideas and strategies to make math more fun for students often takes a lot of time, energy, and imagination. To give you a hand, here are five ways to add variety to elementary school math homework and review.

Play math bingo

Math homework doesn’t always have to be about assigning exercises from a textbook. Switch things up by introducing your students to math bingo ! All you have to do is print the bingo cards from our website and ask your students to play with their parents at home. Parents, meanwhile, can choose the types of operations to work on based on their child’s grade level. This simple activity is not only enjoyable, but also supports your students’ learning progression.

Play Fin lapin

Learning through play is a proven method for keeping kids motivated in school, and math class is no exception. Alloprof’s hit game Fin lapin (French only, but easy to understand) allows students to have fun while reviewing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division tables. Featuring four difficulty levels, it lets players choose which operations to work on as well as helps them to practice finding missing terms. Parents can set a timer to limit the activity to 15 minutes.

Play Météormath

Here’s a game that’ll really get your students excited about math homework! In Météormath 2 (French only, but easy to understand), players practice their math tables from 1 to 12 while tackling exercises that involve all four operations. The arcade-style educational game has three difficulty levels: beginner, intermediate, and expert. The goal is to destroy the meteorites threatening our planet by correctly answering math equations. One of the perks of this activity is that the teacher doesn’t have to worry about providing the answer key! And, as with most Alloprof games, if players get a wrong answer, they’re asked the same question at least three more times to help them learn from their mistakes.

Did you know

Our interactive exercise on decimal numbers allows your students to practice addition and subtraction with decimal numbers. Thanks to operations that adapt to the student's school level, it has great educational potential in the classroom as well as for homework and lessons.

Calculate the area of Flo

For homework and review related to calculating the area of a shape, our team developed an activity that gets students to calculate the area of our friendly mascot, Flo, using unit squares. Simply print our tool and hand it out to your class. For examples of how to calculate area, especially when half squares are involved, see our elementary school concept sheet on area.

Play Allomarket

A classic role-playing activity is a must for elementary school students. Playing grocery store  can be an effective way for kids to learn about money and decimals. On our website, you’ll find an excellent printable tool with materials for your students to cut out at home so they can play with their parents. In the game, players fill out pretend grocery lists and shop using paper coins and bills, but they must stay on budget!
