Using videos to add variety to your math lessons

The benefits of using a variety of learning strategies when teaching is well documented. However, whether because of time limitations or lack of inspiration, it can be tricky to put this idea into practice. To help you add to your toolbox, here are five ways to incorporate videos—like the ones produced by Alloprof’s team of teachers—into your math lessons.

Review existing knowledge

Before starting a new concept, it can be useful to show your students a recap video to ensure that everyone is on the same page. For example, you could have them watch Alloprof’s video on equivalent fractions before moving on to operations on fractions:

  • Play the video on an interactive whiteboard (IW)
  • Ask students to raise their hands to answer the questions in the video
  • Find the equivalent fraction

Try fun challenges

Some Alloprof videos conclude with a challenge. You can use these challenges to review the featured concept and get students to tackle the proposed exercise. Give this idea a try with our video on least common multiples (LCMs) (French only). It’s a great icebreaker! Will your students be up to the challenge?

Go over solutions

Most of Alloprof’s videos explain how to get to the right answer using an example. Why not introduce these examples as problems to solve? Try doing the following:

  • Ask students to try to solve the problem on their own
  • Watch the video as a class and use it to demonstrate the correct solution

Illustrate important steps

Many of Alloprof’s math videos contain explanations with examples. When incorporated into your lessons, these videos are an excellent tool for helping students understand the key steps to different math processes as soon as they’re presented and before starting to work on exercises.

Draw parallels with the real world

What better way to teach a new concept than by applying it to real-life scenarios? Some of Alloprof’s videos provide concrete examples drawn from everyday life. You can use these kinds of videos to go through examples that will resonate with your students. To get a better idea of what we mean, check out our video on multiplying numbers.
