    Hello Mangousteagile51!:)

The National Policy of 1878 was a response to the economic crisis of 1873. John A. Macdonald, with the help of the rest of his party (conservative), suggested a policy which was based on three elements: the increase in tariffs, the creation of a railway (the transcontinental) and the arrival of immigrants.

The purpose of this policy was to promote an internal market and therefore, at the same time, to help Canadian businesses.

If you need more details, you can always consult our fact sheet on the subject. :)
