    Photosynthesis can only occur in plant cells, because only these contain chloroplasts, which contain chlorophyll. It is this pigment which is responsible for the absorption of light energy, which starts the reaction.

    Cellular respiration occurs in cells that contain mitochondria. This reaction is therefore present in both plant and animal cells.
