    Good evening TomateSupra7536!

In the 20th century, immigrants from all over the world came to settle in Canada. In addition, two-thirds of these immigrants came from the United States and the United Kingdom, since they are culturally close to Canada.

Therefore there were certain measures that were put in place to control the arrival of those numerous immigrants. At the time, the federal government was particularly keen to select newcomers itself, particularly on the basis of cultural and language resemblances.

Today, non-American and non-British immigrants mostly come from countries like Ukraine or Russia, but they are subject to more restrictions. In addition, these immigrants, who do not necessarily share the North American culture, can be greeted with more suspicion by the Canadian citizens. Immigrants from other countries who operate a business in Canada are sometimes even more at risk of being the target of vandalism.

To learn more about migratory flows in the 20th century, I invite you to consult our concept sheet on this subject.
