    Good evening!

The Prime Minister at the time, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, took steps to be able to amend the Canadian Constitution without having to seek the consent of the British Parliament. This is called the “repatriation of the constitution”. The Constitution Act of 1982 is one of two fundamental texts of the Constitution of Canada. This law includes the Charter of Rights and Freedoms as well as the procedure for amending the Canadian constitution.

There were also some problems with the creation of this law. I invite you to consult our fact sheet on the subject in order to know more details.

Hope that answers your question! :)
