The day after the result of the 1980 referendum, The Prime Minister of Quebec, Jacques Parizeau, resigned. He will be replaced by Lucien Bouchard, leader of the Bloc Québécois.
20 years later, the Prime Minister of Canada, Jean Chrétien, passed the Referendum Clarity Act. This law specifies that the question asked in a referendum must be approved by the federal government so that it is clear and easily understood by the population.
