Why does the answer key use a positive value for g rather than negative as you see in the book page 77.? Is this an error? Is this because the force is going upwards against gravity and in the example in the book its the cart going across the table being pulled down by a hanging mass.. maybe inanswered my own question...Thanks

    Actually, the sign of your acceleration depends on your frame of reference and the direction of your motion. Here, if we define the downward movement of the mass as positive, then since the acceleration is in the same direction, the acceleration is positive.
