Colonialism was an established policy, which aimed at the occupation and exploitation of a territory, by a state or country foreign to it. This can be for economic, social, etc. reasons.
Example: Colonization is a consequence of colonialism at the time.
On the other hand, neocolonialism is a dependence of one state on another state.
