    The answer to this question really depends on what type of shot you are attempting and at what distance you are shooting it.


    If you are attempting to throw from far away, you may want to try shooting at an angle approaching 45°, which maximizes the basketball's landing distance.

    At closer distances, during a lay-up, for instance, you may want to try shooting at a higher angle, thus allowing the ball to go through the hoop more easily. At farther distances, you may allow yourself to shoot at a shallower angle in the hope that the ball can rebound through the hoop.

    All that said, there is likely an angle below which no ball can enter the hoop. I am not aware of any studies that consider this question, but I would estimate this angle is between 40° and 50°...
