How do I know if a reaction is endothermic or exothermic when looking at the chemical equation?

    That's a great question; let's look into it! 

    In an endothermic reaction, there is more energy absorbed than released. On the other hand, in an exothermic reaction, there is more energy released than absorbed. 

    Therefore, when writing the chemical equation, we include energy on the reactants' side for an endothermic reaction and on the products' side for an exothermic reaction.


    Endothermic reaction :

    Reactants + Energy → Products


    Exothermic reaction:

    Reactants → Products + Energy
