How do I calculate the intensity of two sounds if for example, 2 50dB sounds don't make 100dB then what does it add up to?

    Hi ShyOwl155,

    Thank you for your question!

To evaluate the loudness of a sound, we use the decibel scale. This unit of measurement is a bit different than the usual ones you're using because it's a logarithmic one. It means that for every 10 dB, the sound is 10 times stronger.

So, if you two 50 dB sounds, you get a 53 dB sound. Here's the formula to use if you want to calculate the loudness of two sounds :

    $$L_{total} = 10*log_{10}(10^{L_{1}/2}+10^{L_{2}/10})$$

Also, here's our concept sheet on sound waves if you want to know more on the subject :

I hope that helps and feel free to write us again !
