Why did Rutherford use positive alpha particles for his experiment? I don't get the connection with Thomson's atomic model.

thanks

    Hi :)

Rutherford used positive alpha particles in his gold foil experiment to test Thomson's atomic model. Thomson's model suggested a "plum pudding" structure with positive charge spread throughout the atom. By using alpha particles, Rutherford aimed to observe how they interacted with the positively charged part of the atom. The unexpected result of some alpha particles being deflected or bouncing back led Rutherford to propose the nuclear model, where most of the atom's mass is concentrated in a small, positively charged nucleus, challenging Thomson's model.

Ask if you have any other questions. :) See you soon! :D
