Alloprof: 25 years of building an innovative solution for academic success

Sometimes, all it takes is a spark to create something big. Sandrine Faust found this spark. She studied special education and administration before completing her studies in 1996. Fresh out of school, she began a career in teaching, and immediately felt compelled to address the issues of academic delays and student dropout rates. She wanted to do more for students, but this would require breaking down classroom barriers and finding a way to hold space for the tens of thousands of young people who needed help. Sandrine is a woman of action. In 1996, fuelled by her desire to do more—and to do it better—she co-founded Alloprof, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free support to all Quebec students who might be struggling with academic difficulties. In 1999, she took the reins as Alloprof’s Executive Director.

Alloprof today

Along with a team of talented, dedicated individuals, Sandrine has never stopped innovating and adopting the latest technologies to support students in their learning career. Her vision, energy, and ideas have quickly yielded tangible results.

In the early 2000s, Alloprof created an extensive and universally accessible library of educational content, an online platform students and teachers could use to communicate among each other, hundreds of videos explaining key concepts, and even video games revolutionizing lesson reviews. All of this was firmly and respectfully rooted in the educational ecosystem. Alloprof initially attracted a few thousand students. Today, those numbers are in the tens and even hundreds of thousands. By helping young people overcome difficulties as soon as they arise, the organization has become an authority in the realm of academic support and dropout prevention. The Ministère de l’Éducation even mentions the organization in three of its action plans: the 2009 I care about school! initiative, the 2017 Policy on Educational Success, and the 2021 Revitalization Plan for Educational Success.

Over the years, Sandrine and her team have focused on building a solid foundation, all while taking advantage of Quebec’s booming tech industry. Alloprof has been integrating new analytical tools and using artificial intelligence to provide students who are struggling with learning difficulties with a more personalized experience. The Alloprof team has come up with an array of resources that are extremely flexible and that can be adapted depending on each student’s autonomy level. This makes it possible to optimize operating costs, even when health measures cause schools to shut down and classes to be cancelled, resulting in a 60% rise in service usage. Remarkably, the site’s popularity has increased more than 25% per year, thus highlighting its necessity and relevancy as a cost-effective solution capable of exponential growth.
