When the weather turns cold, it can be hard to convince your kids to go outside. But if you promise them a treasure hunt for Christmas decorations, they may just change their minds! Here is a great activity to get some fresh air on weekends or evenings while exploring your neighbourhood together—the Holiday Seek-and-Find! Help your child sharpen their observation skills by searching for different Christmas decorations around your neighbourhood.

Treasure Hunt Variations

Looking to stretch out the activity? Here are a few variations to try:

  • Create two or more teams, making sure there’s at least one adult per team. Then, set a time limit to run around and see how many items from the list you can snap photos of.
  • Choose one item per day, such as an elf or a Santa hat, then take time to notice every place you see one. If you have younger children, they can also try counting and writing down the number items they find. At the end of the week, you can compare the numbers together and note which item was the most common, or which was the rarest.
  • Is bad weather keeping you indoors? Take your treasure hunt to a department store and see if you can find everything on the list. Is your home trimmed out for the holidays? If so, have a treasure hunt without even leaving the house!
  • Have a long road trip coming up? Use our treasure hunt list to keep your child occupied, all while flexing their observation skills!
