25 educational activities for the holiday season

I’m the proud mom of two boys, aged 7 and 10, and have worked in the education field for years. I’m incredibly fortunate to be part of the team behind Alloprof Parents, an important, forward-looking initiative that’s near and dear to my heart.

The holidays offer a welcome break from school, but it can be hard to fill up all that free time without resorting to watching TV.

To give you some inspiration, here are 25 activities that are both enjoyable and educational. Get creative and have fun!

  1. Do puzzles.
  2. Build a snow fort (if there’s enough snow!).
  3. Go skating, snowshoeing, or skiing (weather permitting!).
  4. Read a fairy tale and draw your own illustrations.
  5. Spend a quiet afternoon at the library.
  6. Write and mail a letter to a friend.
  7. Record a new voicemail message.
  8. Have a picnic in your living room.
  9. Go to a museum visit a farm, or check out an exhibition.
  10. Prepare a dance performance, a magic show, or a circus act.
  11. Build things out of LEGO bricks.
  12. Make cookies.
  13. Invent a recipe.
  14. Play board games.
  15. Create a reading nook.
  16. Design a treasure hunt (you can create one for your kids, or vice versa).
  17. Write and illustrate a comic book.
  18. Replace words or sentences in a story with your own to create a new one.
  19. Have a lip sync battle.
  20. Pretend to do a newscast while reading out letters, texts, and emails from family members.
  21. Play the dictionary game: one player chooses a word from the dictionary and the others make up silly definitions.
  22. Turn reading aloud into a game : read a story out loud as a family, with everyone taking turns reading a sentence at a time.
  23. Play an improv game: act out amusing scenarios drawn from a hat.
  24. Make a short film using video editing software.
