When the weather is warm and sunny, all we want to do is spend time outside.
At least, my family does! And I know many others feel the same.

I believe that summer is the perfect time to learn. That’s right—learn! Whether it’s through self-directed play or more structured educational activities, you and your kids can keep your minds active until fall.

To give you some inspiration, here are five fun and educational outdoor activities that you can do with the entire family, for little to no cost!

Create a herbarium
If you enjoy walking along forest trails, through parks, or simply around your neighbourhood, keep your eyes peeled for different tree species and plants.

You probably know some of their names. Consider creating a herbarium—a collection of dried plant specimens—with your family by documenting the plants you come across during your treks.

Tips and tools

ALTERNATIVE : Instead of collecting specimens, you can practise your observational drawing skills and sketch them. After all, science and art are natural partners. It’s an additional challenge, but you may discover some hidden talents!

You can also plan an outdoor treasure hunt.

Develop your green thumb
Children often eat what appears on their plates without a second thought. But our food takes a long journey before it arrives in our supermarkets. Do you have a garden? Why not encourage your little ones to get their hands dirty?

As they watch the seedlings you planted grow into vegetables, they’ll have a better understanding of where their food comes from. Gardening is also a fun way for them to gain independence and learn practical life skills.

Plan a trip as a family
When planning a vacation with your family, there are plenty of opportunities to learn. You can research outdoor areas to visit, establish (and follow!) a budget, make a packing checklist, and more.

Plus, a trip is great motivation for your kids to put their knowledge to the test.

Build a dream toy
Have your children ever asked for their own dollhouse, see-saw, or soapbox car? If you put your heads together, you and your family can build something incredible!

Tips and tools

From the initial design to the final construction, you’ll need to draw on your math skills and use your imaginations.

Go geocaching
Embark on an urban adventure with your family and go looking for a geocache! To find the secret item, you’ll need to interpret clues and use navigational techniques. You’ll have a great time discovering your city’s hidden gems and even get some exercise.

Summer fun doesn’t need to be mindless! Go outside with your family and try these exciting, educational activities while soaking up the sun.
