Digital Competency: Mobilizing Digital Technology for Personal and Professional Empowerment

Article

In an ever-changing world, digital technology is an invaluable tool for personal and professional development, both for you and your students. By integrating technology with intention and care, you can learn essential career skills now and help your students prepare for their professional lives down the road. This article will inspire you to use digital resources to foster autonomy, adaptability, and innovation in the classroom.

Understanding the Dimension

This dimension of digital competency focuses on the strategic use of technology to enhance and maintain professional skills that will be useful now or in the future. It encourages the use of digital tools to facilitate integration into the workforce, pursue continuing education, and develop an entrepreneurial spirit. By encouraging active, thoughtful exploration, this dimension promotes autonomy and adaptability, preparing students for the challenges they will face in the working world.

For teachers, this dimension may look like this:

  • Joining an online learning community (link in French) to find information and interact with education stakeholders.
  • Undertaking a self-directed continuing education process.
  • Listening to education podcasts to stay up-to-date on current teaching practices.

For students, this dimension may look like this:

  • Creating a digital portfolio to record their achievements, reflections, and school work, building awareness of what they have learned and what they have left to do.
  • Using Alloprof’s student platform to maintain and develop the knowledge and skills they will need when they enter the workforce.
  • Filming a video of a news report on a career-oriented project.

Teaching the Dimension

Among other things, this dimension aims to empower students and help them prepare for their professional lives. Here are a few ideas to explore in class or share with your students:

Tips and tools

As a teacher, you have several options for developing the skills related to this dimension. Here are a few examples:

  • Explore e-learning platforms to develop your knowledge and skills on all things education. The LEARN platform, for example, offers asynchronous training on a wide range of topics.
  • Keep up with the latest trends in education and digital technology by regularly consulting sites like Alloprof Teachers and École branchée (in French).
  • Use the resources and activities (in French) available through École en réseau to further your professional development.

Collaborators

This concept sheet was written with the help of Séverine Parent and Jessica Métivier, professor and lecturer, respectively, in the educational studies department at Université du Québec à Rimouski – Campus de Lévis, and the students enrolled in “Mobilisation du numérique” (mobilizing digital technology) during the fall 2024 term.
